Jalgaon, widely recognised as Maharashtra’s “Banana Capital,” is currently facing mounting agricultural challenges as persistent heatwaves and soaring temperatures continue to impact banana cultivation across the region. The escalating climatic conditions have raised serious concerns among farmers, agricultural experts, and industry stakeholders regarding crop productivity and long-term sustainability.

Banana cultivation is a significant economic backbone of the district, contributing extensively to Maharashtra’s agricultural landscape. However, with temperatures consistently surpassing 40°C, banana plantations are experiencing severe heat stress, adversely affecting overall crop performance and fruit quality.

Farmers from multiple parts of the district have reported visible signs of crop deterioration, including leaf scorching, sunburn damage on banana bunches, excessive moisture loss, and impaired plant development. The prolonged exposure to extreme heat is weakening root activity, disrupting nutrient absorption, and accelerating soil moisture evaporation, ultimately reducing the crop’s yield potential and market value.

Agricultural specialists have emphasised that the increasing frequency of extreme weather events is becoming a major challenge for heat-sensitive crops such as bananas. Experts advocate the adoption of climate-resilient agricultural practices, including precision irrigation, balanced crop nutrition, mulching, and advanced stress-management solutions to minimise environmental damage and sustain crop productivity.

The current situation has once again underscored the growing importance of sustainable farming practices and scientific crop management strategies. Strengthening soil vitality, enhancing plant resilience, and adopting innovative agricultural technologies are being viewed as essential measures to safeguard future banana production in the region.

As climate variability continues to influence agricultural ecosystems, farmers in Jalgaon remain hopeful for effective technological support, modern agronomic guidance, and progressive farming solutions that can help preserve productivity, profitability, and the long-term stability of banana cultivation in the district.
